Kirby Grindalythe Waypoint 1
The ride begins in Sledmere Village and follows a quiet lane to the quaint village of Kirby Grindalythe showing the typical red-brick architecture of East Yorkshire. Grass tracks lead across farmland and the chalk landscape towards the village of Wintringham and quiet lanes, then guide us down to the village of West Lutton where a permissive track leads up a hill to provide views over the vale below. The ride returns by grass tracks along fields and the quiet lane back to Sledmere. Sledmere House has a lovely wooded car-park near its tea-room if you wish to have some refreshments on return. Parking availabel at Sledmere Carpark. Leave the car-park and go towards Sledmere Village by riding past the monument on the left known as Eleanor’s Cross (a 19th century cross adapted as a war memorial). Sledmere is home to the Sykes family, the greatest landowners in this region in the 19th century, and still active in estate management and job creation today. Take the left turn signposted Kirby Grindalythe, a very quiet lane that pass the traditional red brick Sledmere estate buildings. Follow the lane for about 3.5km all the way to the village.

Ride through the pretty village of Kirby Grindalythe and turn left at the junction onto the main road. Turn immediately right through a narrow bridleway gate. Ride straight along the field edges, ignoring a bridleway which joins from the left after about 500m. At one point you go left through a gate, still following the field edge to the left, and then go straight again to the road. Cross straight over the road onto a track. Follow the track past a farm. The track then turns left and then right following a field edge. At the trees, turn right as you go into the wood and follow the track along the edge of the wood. You come out on to a chalky farm track, which turns right and leads to the road.

At the road turn right. After passing a farm on the left called LadyHills and a wood, look carefully for a bridleway on the left (the entrance may be slightly overgrown). Follow the earth path between a narrow stretch of woodland, then grassland, and cross straight over a lane onto a farm track. Follow the track, and as it begins to bend left towards the farmhouse take the bridleway on the right by a copse into the fields.Follow the grassy track uphill towards the next farm. Just before the farm, turn left into a wooded area. Follow the track through the wood until you reach the road next to Whin Moor Farm.

Turn right onto the quiet road and follow it downhill. After about a mile, take the first left and follow straight until the village of West Lutton. West Lutton has one of the many churches throughout the Wolds renovated by the Sykes family in the 19th century: Sir Tatton Sykes (the 4th Baronet) and his son, also Sir Tatton Sykes, paid for the restoration of over 20 churches. Turn first right into the village and follow round until the T-junction, where you turn right. As the road takes a sharp bend to the right, you turn left onto a track heading up the hill out of the village.

Follow the track up the hill and keep to the right of the hedge as it climbs up the hill. At the top turn right and follow the grassy track straight over a bridleway crossing. The wide grass track runs parallel with a wood your left. Eventually take the track through the wood to your left and turn right onto a track past farm buildings and join the drive to the road. At the road turn left and return to Sledmere.
