Errington Loop (6.5km) Print
Errington Loop Waypoint 1
Errington Wood is a stretch of woodland on a prominent hillside above New Marske. The trees were planted in 1773 as a commercial scheme. From the 1800s to 1923 rich deposits of iron ore were mined and horses played an important role in the early development of the industry as they were used to transport iron ore. Later they were replaced by a narrow gauge railway and part of this is now incorporated into the bridleway. The woodland is now owned by Redcar and Cleveland Council. After going the length of the wood, the Errington Loop crosses fields, dropping down to the historic village of Upleatham with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
